"Hybrid Utilities: The Most Affordable Energy Option for Homeowners"
January 5th, 2019 by Ben Stapleton
What is the Hybrid Utility Program (HUP)?
The Hybrid Utility Program is an energy program made available to homeowners that consume power through the grid via their local utility company. It allows for homeowners to take the "Middle-man" or "power company" out of the equation by removing them as the homeowner's source of electricity and turn the home itself into an energy production site.

How is this possible? With the power of solar panels of course! For qualifying homeowners, the federal government and HUP have teamed up to provide 30% of on-site energy installations to be completely PAID for. In some states, this offer can be combined with individual state incentives that are also included in the Hybrid Utility Program for savings up to 60-70% of on-site energy installations to be completely PAID for.
On-Site Energy Production
With each advancement in solar technology, solar power steadily becomes more affordable and more and more homeowners are opting in for clean, affordable energy. No longer prohibited by cost, solar power is an increasingly attractive energy option. Many homeowners are shocked to discover that most solar installations will pay for themselves in as little as 3 to 8 years. When you consider the fact that solar installations will typically last 25 to 40 years, you’ll realize just how affordable and efficient solar power has become. A solar panel installation’s cost efficiency varies widely based on the quality of the solar panels, environmental factors, as well as your current energy costs.
Environmental Factors
Environmental factors range from your actual climate to your home’s orientation. You’d actually be surprised just how important the latter is! Your home’s orientation is extremely important because solar panels are by far the most efficient when in direct sunlight. Because we live in the northern hemisphere, homes with a lot of south facing roof space benefit the most from their solar installations. Homeowners with more east and west roof coverage will benefit the most in the morning or afternoon sun instead of the peak hours of the day. While still suitable for solar installations, it just isn’t as efficient as south facing installations.

Another important environmental factor is shade. Any homeowner considering solar panels should either remove shade trees completely, or at least keep the branches trimmed back. Even if your roof is shaded for only a few hours a day, that’s a few hours less of prime energy production. Your climate is also a factor in solar efficiency. Homeowners in warm climates make the most out of solar power because during the summer, when you’re using the most energy (air conditioner), you’re also generating the most energy.
Quality of your Solar Panels
Solar panels vary quite a bit in the quality of their energy production. Most monocrystalline silicon solar panels have efficiency ratings varying from 15%-21%. These values represent the percentage of sunlight converted to energy. More efficient solar panels don’t necessarily mean greater value because they’ll cost you more money. Homeowners should consider many different aspects before deciding on the type of panel they’ll be installing. If you don’t have much room on your roof, it might be better to opt for a more efficient solar panel. While homeowners with an abundance of roof space facing south can simply install an additional solar panel.
Federal & State Tax Credits
Tax credits are another major factor in solar power’s affordability. Not only are solar panels much cheaper than ever, but you’ll qualify for federal tax credits—and, in some instances—state tax credits too. These are perfect for offsetting the costs. When you file your taxes, fill out the necessary paperwork, and 30% of your total costs are refunded. These are tax credits and not deductions too, so if you qualify for a $4k tax credit and owe $4k in taxes for the year—you’ll not a owe a dime!
Resell Your Unused Energy
Homeowners with extensive solar installations can be sure that their excess solar energy will never go to waste. As more and more homeowners are supplementing their energy consumption with solar power, energy companies are offering to buy their customer’s excess energy. Most energy companies offer “Net Energy Metering Plans,” which track how much energy you consume throughout the year with how much energy you create. You can sell whatever excess energy you’ve produced. When accounting for all the various factors, solar power is an extremely affordable form of energy while also a fantastic investment for your home.
